Siberian Husky
Breed Info
Siberian Husky are very gregarious and require the company of other dogs or their friend, family at all times.
If you have a busy life and or only have enough time, space for one dog then don't buy a Siberian Husky, maybe a Cat?
A bored Siberian Husky is a destructive and escape artist expert dog, they require socializing, exercise, action, getting out and about, puppy training classes are a good start, but its only the beginning.
They are friendly to all, including strangers, so if you are looking for a watch dog or loyal one man dog, please look at a different breed, maybe a German Shepherd?
Strong Prey drive, do you enjoy the local possums or birds visiting in your yard or do you own a cat, chicken, parrot or small fluffy animal?
Siberian Huskies are hunters of anything small fluffy, feathered, animals, even sheep, they have a naturally high prey drive.
They will rip up a chicken, cat or moodle in a few minutes!
If raised as a puppy with a cat or moodle type dog, it is possible for them to live together, but it is also possible that one day in their adolescense usually, the cat may dart off and the Siberian Husky will give chase.
Much care, attention and supervision is required to make it work.
I wouldn't even try with chickens, or birds.
Do you love your garden, flower pots, vege patch? Siberian Huskies will also love to dig up your yard at times, some crater size. Age can help and some do grow out of the habit, though best not to have an award winning, landscaped garden and a Siberian Husky.
Fur, fur everywhere, they shed their coats at the least once a year, at most for six months of the year, so if you want a neat tidy furless house, maybe choose a poodle?
Routine regular brushing , when shedding, is required to get dead hair removed to enable quicker healthy regrowth.
Siberian Huskies only require one meal a day and when not run for many km's they don't need as much as other breeds. Taking excess weight off is harder to trim off and can cause injuries, so prevent the need by feeding them correctly.
One of the most important and potentially dangerous natural proclivities of the Siberian Husky is the tremendous desire to run, and having to be kept on lead or in a safely fenced area to allow this desire.
Fences, tall strong fences, you may become an expert fencer with this breed, some Siberian Huskies will try to dig under, while other olympic types will leap over the top.
Strong tall dig proof fences are a must.
A running harness and a scooter/bike can help with exercise required for your Siberian Husky, or regular long walks with a run in a dog fenced park daily.
If allowed unrestricted exercise they will most likely be run over or lost as the Siberian Husky is fast and, running, and outside smells, activities, interest them a whole lot more than you asking them to come here.
If you want a very obedient offlead dog, maybe get an Australian Kelpie?
Most importantly your attention, love and inclusion in family time, and activities will ensure the full appreciation and happiness in a Siberian Husky.
